While online banking is one of the fastest growing financial services today, it also requires a high level of responsibility. We have an extremely sophisticated approach and are fully committed to protecting member security.

One of our latest improvements is the introduction of the Secure SMS which ensures a higher level of personal security for all those members conducting transfers in and out of their accounts.

What security does Internet Banking include?
  • 128-bit encryption and sophisticated firewalls
  • Verification by digital certificate - ‘Verisign’
  • On screen evidence of security protection, eg. Padlock icon
  • Password Protection and Virus Protection
  • Secure SMS
What is 128-bit encryption?

This is the level of ‘encryption’ that applies to any information or transaction entered within Internet Banking. Encrypted transactions are ‘scrambled’ to protect the security of the data. Once you have logged into Internet Banking you are in a completely encrypted environment. 128-bit encryption is currently the highest level of encryption available on the Internet.

128 bit encryption does three main things:
  • Ensures all information is encrypted so no user on another PC can see or interpret a member’s information.
  • Ensures no other person can 'break in' to a member's active session and pretend they are the member.
  • Ensures no other server can pretend to be the Internet Banking server.

Secure SMS

What is Secure SMS?

Secure SMS is a security system that makes use of SMS messaging on your mobile phone, or voice activated message on your landline phone, and is provided free of charge to all members.

How do you register for “Secure SMS”?

You will have the opportunity to register when you first log in to Internet Banking. If you have previously refused registration, you will need to contact us to enable registration by calling into your nearest Branch or calling our Member Contact Centre on 13 25 85 (or + 61 8 8205 8888 from overseas). Please have your membership number and Telephone Banking Passcode ready to quote for identification when you call us.

How does “Secure SMS” work?

When you perform a transaction or activity in Internet Banking that requires a higher level of security, you will be prompted to verify this with a secure SMS code that is sent to your mobile phone, or a voice message to your home or business landline phone. You will have the option to select from a list of registered phone numbers on our system when performing the transaction or activity that requires a higher level of security. Once you have received the secure SMS code to your mobile or landline phone you will enter the code on to the Internet Banking screen, which will allow your transaction or activity to be finalised. It’s as simple as that!

Please note that you will not be required to enter a Secure SMS code if you perform transactions which are in your saved favourites.

Is there an alternative to Secure SMS authentication?

If you have a web enabled mobile phone you can download a VIP Access application for use as a mobile phone security token. For information on how to download the application to your mobile phone (a mobile data plan with internet access is required) visit: http://vipmobile.verisign.com/home.v

How do I register for the mobile phone VIP Security Token?

If you are currently registered for Secure SMS, or have access to a token issued to you prior to 31 July 2011, you can self register, simply by accessing the Token Registration menu from the Service Options screen of Internet Banking. If you are unable to self register, simply call our Member Contact Centre on 13 25 85 (Mon-Fri 8am to 8pm CST and Saturday 9am to 3pm CST) to arrange registration.

What if you do not have a web enabled mobile phone?

If you do not have access to a web enabled mobile phone you will need to apply for a VIP hardware Security Token which will offer the same code-based security service. To apply for a Security Token, please download and fill out the Application for a Security Token form.

To find out more about the Secure SMS facility please refer to our list of FAQ’s and our Information Sheet.

VIP Security Tokens

For those members that are unable to register for Secure SMS authentication, Community CPS is able to provide VIP Security in the form of a mobile phone VIP Access application or hardware Security Tokens, which are small, lightweight devices that generate a unique 6-digit passcode every 30 seconds.

VIP Security Tokens are a secondary level security system that aims to protect members from unauthorised use of their accounts via Internet Banking.

Once you have a VIP Security Token, each time you wish to transfer funds between memberships, transfer to another financial institution, make a BPAY® payment or pay a bill by cheque, you will be prompted to load the passcode from your Security Token. There are two types of VIP security token:

VIP Mobile phone security token – Simply access your VIP Access application from your mobile phone and enter the unique Security Code displayed in the field provided within Internet Banking. Your payment cannot be completed unless this passcode is entered. VIP hardware security token - Simply press the button on your token and you will be provided with a unique, 6-digit passcode. Your payment cannot be completed unless this passcode is entered.
